Another in a series of 'nightmare creatures' I've been working on - exploring dark themes and disturbing imagery. The initial idea behind this guy was to have his flesh grow OVER his armor, slowly immobilizing him. I got this idea from seeing large old trees that will grow into and engulf nearby iron fences!

Done in my usual technique, scribble a bunch of doodles to explore shapes and silhouettes - then 'find' some horrific creature within the sketch. I love discovering the creature as I draw, working out anatomy and imagining how it moves or eats.

Just trying to have fun, drawing crazy crap while I'm home sick as a dog.

Forest Troll

I did this piece as a workshop for ImagineFX (issue #16). The point of the workshop was to show my creative process for creating original creatures. For me, a big part of that is starting with a background story of some kind - so I made up this scenario: forest troll in the woods [he's an ambush predator] sees some pretty lights and uses his lightening fast reflexes to 'catch' one as they flutter by. In his ignorance, his terrible strength crushes a poor fairy [who, when dancing in the forest, create the most beautiful lights]. Slowly the dumb troll begins to realize something's wrong as the magical fairy light begins to fade...

Just a quick creature design I did to relax on a Sunday night (3 - 4hrs in photoshop). Many of my creature designs start as random doodles in my sketch book - then, when I have an interesting silhouette, I try to 'find' the design within the scribbles. Alot of attempts go bad, but it sure is fun trying - I'm often suprised with the result!

Enjoy!

Black Forest Banshee

Living here in the Black Forest region of Germany is wonderful for sparking my imagination. Taking walks in the dark wood bring to mind ancient lore of werewolves, banshees and other legendary creatures. I learned that people who can't speak to express themselves (mutes or folks of low status being mistreated) or people full of rage, after death can come back as banshees. Here's a quick concept of a forest banshee rising from a stagnant pool of water.

I tried a version of this character with a lower jaw opened impossibly wide - but I found hiding the lower jaw seemed more creepy to me. The background isn't much... just a quick indication of some dark forest. I added some rays of moonlight to highlight the creature and give it an eerie glow. Spent about 4 hours on this, divided into two evenings after work. More creature craziness to follow...

Enjoy!

I recently felt the need to do something different than work-related concepts - so I entered Blizzard's Art contest for 2D concept and 3D artists. I didn't get to spend much time on the entry (6 - 8 hrs), but it was fun revisiting the fantasy genre. I think I'll indulge myself in similar art genres as often as I can to help hone the skills and creativity. Enjoy!

Another room interior with a dramatic lighting scheme - just more practice, really. I liked the down shot I went with... not sure how well the blood reads. Inspired by FPS games, which I love playing when I should be doing other stuff... like painting!

This was really an excercise in lighting and painting texture. WAY more complicated than the exterior concept paintings I usually do... fun stuff, however. I painted this from a sketch I did during one of our 'sketch group' meetings. Those things are wonderful for getting the 'ol creative juices flowing early in the morning... just good friends, great conversation and lots of coffee. Good times. This creature was conceptualized by drawing randomly on a page and 'finding' something in the doodle to work with. Suprise!

A piece of game art for an upcoming RPG 'Age of Decadence'. I've been doing location paintings which will act as 'loading screen' art. Got about 8 - 10 of these done so far. I really enjoy these because there isn't alot of fine detail required, which keeps them loose and energetic. Fun stuff!

I know the spaceship hanger is a little uninspired, but I learned alot about painter with this piece. I enjoyed working so loose on the background (and how gestural the figures in the middle ground are). Overall, a fun painting to work on.
C&C most welcome, thanks.
Cheers!
An idea I had for this graphic novel I was working on (nearly 4 years ago! LOL). I decided to revisit the underground city of 'Pith'. I thought it'd be cool if the architecture followed the underlying cavernous structures.
It's fun learning painter! C&C most welcome.

Conjuring The Storm

This was my final entry for the recent Master & Servant 2D challenge. It didn't win anything, but I was pretty happy with how it turned out considering it was only my 2nd attempt at digital art (the first being my Machine Flesh 2D challenge... but we won't go there, LOL).
This piece was ment to allude to the shaman's power over 2 servants: the little girl servant in awe of his magical abilities and the environment itself (even the weather bends to his will). I wanted this piece to be as much a landscape as a character painting (partly because I've never done a landscape painting in traditional or digital media).
Thanks so much for the kind and talented artist who encouraged me and gave me wonderfully constructive crits. I learned alot from this CG community... you guys are awesome!

'hornymask' Creature Design

One of a series of creature designs I was foolin' around with. I called them 'hornymasks' cuz their masks have these huge horns and they usually have 'horny' spikes 'n things sticking outta them. Not sure if my colour scheme makes the character pop... any thoughts?
Anyway, done in photoshop (about 2-3hrs) because I didn't finish my SPECTACULAR entry and I needed to make myself feel better by painting something, LOL.
C&C welcome.
