Living here in the Black Forest region of Germany is wonderful for sparking my imagination. Taking walks in the dark wood bring to mind ancient lore of werewolves, banshees and other legendary creatures. I learned that people who can't speak to express themselves (mutes or folks of low status being mistreated) or people full of rage, after death can come back as banshees. Here's a quick concept of a forest banshee rising from a stagnant pool of water.

I tried a version of this character with a lower jaw opened impossibly wide - but I found hiding the lower jaw seemed more creepy to me. The background isn't much... just a quick indication of some dark forest. I added some rays of moonlight to highlight the creature and give it an eerie glow. Spent about 4 hours on this, divided into two evenings after work. More creature craziness to follow...
